To prevent damage to the carpet when using the vacuum cleaner, place a piece of nylon wire mesh over the carpet and weight it with a book or tile to protect them from the vacuum cleaner. Or tie a screen to the vacuum cleaner and replace the screen frequently as dirt builds up.
